Building Big Numbers: Composing and Decomposing Up to 100,000
In this lesson, students will explore how to compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000 using objects, models, and expanded notation. They’ll build numbers by identifying place values from ten thousands to ones and break them apart to understand how each digit contributes to the whole. Through visual aids, narration, and fun moments, students will strengthen their number sense and confidently move between standard and expanded form. TEKS 3.2(A) Compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000: This standard requires students to understand that numbers can be expressed as a sum of their place values and written in standard form or expanded notation (e.g., 23,456 = 20,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6). MCCRS: 3.NBT.A.2: Read, write, and represent whole numbers through 10,000 using numerals, number names, and expanded form. Compare and explain representations using place-value reasoning MCCRS: 4.NBT.A.2 – Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. This includes composing and decomposing numbers using expanded notation
