Physical Science Lesson 1 Part 2 - When Molecules Meet: Chemical Dance Moves!
This is the second part of a 3-part lesson on Molecular Interactions. This part teaches 6th-grade students the four main types of chemical reactions using a simple "dance move" analogy to make them easy to remember. First, the lesson establishes the Law of Conservation of Atoms, the fundamental rule that atoms are only rearranged during a reaction, never created or destroyed. It also clarifies the difference between single atoms and bonded molecules as the reacting substances. The core of the lesson defines the four reaction types: Synthesis: Simple substances combine to form one complex substance. Decomposition: One complex substance breaks down into simpler parts. Single Replacement: One element replaces another element within a compound. Double Replacement: Two compounds "swap partners" to form two new compounds.
