For college-bound students & families

Test prep your student can talk to.

Most test-prep software is a question bank and a video library: miss a question, read the explanation, move on. HoloTutor is a tutor your student talks with. They ask “why?” out loud or by typing, and the tutor answers out loud on a whiteboard, then takes the follow-up. Like a private tutor at 11pm, with nothing to book.

Practice set · MathQuestion 7 of 12

If 3x + 2y = 12 and x − y = 1, what is the value of x?

  • A2
  • B14/5
  • 3
  • D4
Wait, why isn’t it 3?
Let’s check. If x = 3, then x − y = 1 makes y = 2, and 3x + 2y comes out to 13, not 12.
Oh. So how do I actually solve it?
Solve the second equation for y, substitute it into the first, and you get x = 14/5. I’ll walk through it on the board.

Not another question bank

Test-prep software marks it wrong. HoloTutor talks it through.

Practice apps and video courses are good at serving up questions and showing the right answer. What they can’t do is listen to the student. When the written explanation doesn’t land, there’s nobody to ask. That conversation is what a good tutor is for, and it’s what HoloTutor does.

  • When a student misses a question

Typical test-prep software: Marks it wrong and shows a written solution or a pre-recorded video.

HoloTutor: Your student asks why, in their own words. The tutor works back through it with them, step by step, out loud.

  • When the explanation doesn’t click

Typical test-prep software: The same explanation again. There’s no one to ask a follow-up.

HoloTutor: Ask “why?” again, or “what if…?”, as many times as it takes. Each answer responds to what the student actually said.

  • How it teaches

Typical test-prep software: Videos to watch and text to read. The student mostly listens.

HoloTutor: A spoken back-and-forth on a whiteboard. Lessons stop to check understanding as they go, and the student can talk back at any step.

  • What it covers

Typical test-prep software: The questions in its bank, for the test it was built for.

HoloTutor: Any topic your student asks about, from test skills to the AP, honors and core coursework behind them.

Why HoloTutor

Tutoring that goes where the points are.

Built for students aiming high: standardized tests, AP and honors coursework, and the GPA that competitive colleges read first.

  • A real conversation, not a replay

Each session follows your student: their pace, their questions. They can stop the tutor at any point, ask out loud or by typing, and get an answer out loud on the whiteboard, then ask the follow-up. Concepts get explained until they click, not just repeated.

  • Target weaknesses before they cost points

Quiz results show exactly which questions your student missed, so study time goes to the material that’s actually costing points.

  • Practice anytime, without scheduling tutors

Between practice, clubs and coursework, a standing tutor slot is hard to keep. HoloTutor is there at 6am or 11pm, for ten minutes or two hours.

  • Build confidence for high-stakes exams

Students who have worked through the hard problems themselves walk into the exam calmer. HoloTutor explains the reasoning out loud, not just the final answer, and its lessons check understanding along the way.

  • Strengthen academics for competitive admissions

Test scores are one line on the application. HoloTutor also supports the AP, honors and core coursework behind the transcript that admissions officers read first.

Study smarter

The next point comes from the bottom of the list.

Most students practice what they’re already good at, because it feels productive. Real score gains come from the weakest skills. HoloTutor’s quizzes show what your student is missing, and its lessons go straight at it.

How it works

How a study session works.

  1. 01

    Practice

Pick a subject or a skill and ask Study for a quick quiz. The results show what your student got right and what they missed.

  2. 02

    Talk through the weak spot

An avatar tutor teaches the concept on a whiteboard, then works through problems with your student, step by step. Your student can interrupt with a question at any point, out loud or typed.

  3. 03

    Re-test and move on

Quiz again until it’s solid, then pick the next topic. Adaptive practice that picks the next weak spot for your student is coming soon.

Questions we hear often

Does HoloTutor cover the SAT and ACT?

HoloTutor teaches the math, reading and writing skills those exams test, and a student can open Study and ask for any topic or practice set. HoloTutor is not affiliated with or endorsed by the College Board or ACT.

How is this different from the test-prep apps we already use?

Most test-prep apps are a question bank plus written or video explanations. They show the right answer, but your student can’t ask them anything. HoloTutor is conversational: your student can stop at any point and ask a question by voice or by typing, the tutor answers out loud on a whiteboard, and then it takes the follow-up. It explains the reasoning, not just the solution.

Can my student actually talk with it?

Yes. Your student can pause any lesson and ask a question by voice or by typing, and the tutor answers out loud while it works on the whiteboard. Then they can ask a follow-up, or pick the lesson up where it left off. In Study mode, the whole session is a back-and-forth on whatever topic your student brings.

Is it a replacement for a private tutor?

For many families it covers the day-to-day practice and explanation a tutor would, at any hour. Some keep a human tutor for strategy and use HoloTutor for the practice in between.

Will it just do my child’s homework?

No. HoloTutor teaches the idea and explains the reasoning, and its lessons stop to check understanding along the way. It’s built to teach, which is why KIPP Atlanta Collegiate, a school that banned ChatGPT, approved it.

How much does it cost?

You can start with a free Basic account. Paid plans for heavier daily use are on the Pricing page.
